Father's Day has been a complete write off. Kat spent the morning at the Abasi brunch, which was fine. She got to wear nice clothes and rub shoulders with people who couldn't care less about her for a few hours, but on the plus side there was a lot of free food, which Kat is always a fan of. She's less a fan of coming home to find a note on the table that Jed has to work a double shift and won't be making it home for dinner.

Kat's not a masterchef or anything ridiculous, but she had gone to a fair amount of thought and effort preparing what she would make for Father's Day dinner, and now it wasn't going to happen at all. It's stupid, that she should get upset about this, like it's her day that's being ruined and not her father's, but this was their day. It always has been, since her mother walked out and left them, and Jed has always worked hard to make sure he was home for it.

So she knows it's stupid, but Kat's never been very good at blocking things out even when she knows she should and it's already gotten under her skin. She'd been kicking around at home, slamming doors, feeling sorry for herself and scrolling through her phone contacts until she'd made a hasty decision, sent a text, and now it had led her here.

Tilting her head back, Kat looks up at the Clocktower building with a wry smile. How ostentatious and perfect for Neal Douglas, she expected nothing less. The doorman lets her in and she assumes he knew she was coming, so she breezes past and calls for the elevator without a word. It plays ridiculous music the whole way up, and she has to resist rolling her eyes where nobody can see anyway. Eventually, it spits her out at the top floor (of course) and she finds the apartment easily enough. She's never been inside, and she's kind of itching to know what insane overcompensations she's going to find inside. She's expecting a lot of marble and silk. Maybe animal print.

The scooter is shiny and blue and it purrs like a dream as Kat drives it home from the Quill. She's full to bursting on pie and chai lattes from where she'd sat for hours, her trip plans spread around her on the table and a standing order to keep refilling her mug whenever it emptied. She's got maps and travel guides and a To Do List, and the new backpack she'd bought with Luke's gift card should be arriving any day now.

She's almost giddy with the prospect of getting out of Siren Cove for a while. All she can think about are the lights of New York and how close she is to being able to see them with her own eyes, and she's distracted enough that she doesn't notice the drift of fog rising up around her wheels. She's getting home later than she expected and the streets are all but empty, the night practically whistling a tune of contentment at her.

Kat has spent the last month drowning in more paperwork and textbooks than she thought she could ever stand, but it came to fruition, at least. Stuck to her mirror is her passing grade, and that's all that really matters. She can't help but grin when she looks at it. The way her father had smiled and put a proud hand on her shoulder means just as much. She's now officially cleared for her second year.

Around her, her bedroom is strewn with clothes, but she'd finally decided on an outfit. It had taken more consideration than she usually really bothers to take, but tonight is a celebration of two things, and she intends to make the most of it.

"You're going to be late!" Jed shouts up the stairs, and Kat does another once over of her reflection before shoving her feet into her shoes and running for the door. Jed had kindly offered her a lift down to the beach, and she doesn't want to keep him waiting. She could walk, it's not too far, or at the least she could have taken his car herself, but the look her had given her when she brought that up clearly said he knew she'd be drinking, and there is no way in hell. Which, point.

"My little girl is twenty," he says fondly when she comes racing out the front door, and he's halfway towards ruffling her hair when she puts a hand up to stop him.

"No! You'll wreck it." She's never been so girly in her life and she ducks out from under his arm to jump into the passenger seat before he can comment on it. She only hopes she doesn't end up being the only person at this party.

It's been weeks since she had time to hide out in her favourite abandoned house; between school and assignments and all the mess with the cruise and annoying Luke, she'd almost forgotten about it. Not that she ever really could, she's been visiting the old place for years. It's been her favourite place to go when she wanted to get away since she was fourteen, and she's made up a thousand stories in her head as to why it's been abandoned for so long.

Now though, it's different.

The first thing she notices is that the lawn has been mowed and trimmed, nothing like the overgrown mess she had come to love. The boards on the windows have been taken down as well. Her shoes crunch the gravel as she makes her way up the drive, curious. Surely no one has moved in here. No one has ever lived here, not as far as she can remember. The door has always been locked, so she heads around to the side where she had found an unlocked window five years ago. Age has made it stuck, but she knows the exact way to jiggle it to open it up after many years of practice.

The crate she uses as a booster is still there, so she hoists herself up and through the window, and that's when things get really weird. Instead of the dusty old abandoned room she's used to, there's a bed and a suitcase and oh shit someone has totally moved in.

She's about to make a jump for the window again when she hears someone calling out and she freezes in place. Busted.

The town is almost eerily quiet with everyone away on this mysterious cruise. The invite had come in the mail a few days ago, and Jed had taken one look at it and firmly informed her that she had school. She'd watched the ship depart from the docks, and at first she'd been a little bitter, but now Kat feels like the empty town is her oyster.

She's on her way to the precinct after a full day of classes, and feeling pretty intellectually drained. Right now, she could kill for a glazed donut and some shitty coffee, both of which SCPD have in abundance. She's in the middle of cramming for exams and all she wants to do is pass out in her dad's office while he makes her memorise the fucking Miranda rights or whatever quiz he has in store for her today. Half her favourites are off on this cruise, but she's sure she'll find something to amuse herself with. Beats going home alone to a microwaved meal and crap TV.

Kat is a Siren Cove local, so you've probably seen her around town. Hit her up! Things of note:

  • Kat goes to St Bernadette's
  • Kat has spent like, 90% of her life annoying the SCPD officers, so they all know her
  • She has been known to work cash in hand (sh) at the Quill when required
  • She's human, but being the daughter of a cop, is well acquainted with the supernatural aspect in town

be her friend!

Kat and Jed live in a pretty small 2 bedroom apartment off a cop salary. It's not exactly fancy, but it suits them well enough, and they're comfortable, even a little bit fond of the simple look. They don't entertain much; Siren Cove is full of people with extraordinary houses, and Kat has spent her whole life visiting friends' places that make her own apartment feel like a shoebox. She's not ashamed of where she lives by any means, there's just not a lot of room for guests, and she tends to only bring over her closest friends.
